- INTRODUCTION!lin;
- !lin;
- This digitally compiled map includes geology, geologic provinces, and oil
- and gas fields!lin;
- of the Former Soviet Union. The map is part of a worldwide series on
- CD-ROMs released !lin;
- by the U.S. Geological Survey World Energy Project. The goal of the project
- is to assess the!lin;
- undiscovered, technically recoverable oil and gas resources of the world and
- report these!lin;
- results by the year 2000. For data management purposes the world was divided
- into eight!lin;
- energy regions corresponding approximately to the economic regions of the
- world as defined !lin;
- by the U.S. Department of State. The Former Soviet Union (Region 1) includes
- Armenia,!lin;
- Azerbaijan, Byelarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia,
- Lithuania, Moldova,!lin;
- Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.!lin;
- Each region was then further divided into geologic provinces on the basis
- of natural !lin;
- geologic entities and may include a dominant structural element or a number
- of contiguous!lin;
- elements. Some provinces contain multiple genetically related basins.!lin;
- Geologic province boundaries for the Former Soviet Union were delineated
- using data from!lin;
- different geologic maps, and other tectonic and geographic data
- (see References).!lin;
- Offshore province boundaries were defined by the 2000 meter bathymetric
- contour from the!lin;
- map by Gabrielyants, G.A. (see References). Each province was assigned
- a unique number;!lin;
- the first digit is the region number. An attempt was made to number the
- provinces in!lin;
- geographical groups; onshore, offshore, and combined on and offshore. The
- numbering starts!lin;
- in the west. The list of the provinces sorted by number is shown on the
- right.!lin;
- !lin;
- Oil and gas field data from Petroconsultants International Data Corporation
- worldwide oil!lin;
- and gas field database were allocated to these provinces. The geologic
- provinces are being!lin;
- further subdivided into petroleum systems and assessment units in order
- to appraise the!lin;
- undiscovered petroleum potential of selected provinces of the world. For
- a more in-depth!lin;
- discussion on the geologic provinces and their relative ranking in terms
- of total known!lin;
- petroleum volume, see Klett and others, 1997.!lin;
- !lin;
- Specific details of the data sources and map compilation are given in the
- metadata file on!lin;
- this CD-ROM and in the text at lower right corner. Smaller stratigraphic
- subdivisions of!lin;
- Phanerozoic rock were combined to simplify the map and to maintain
- consistency with other!lin;
- maps of the series. Precambrian rocks are undivided. Oil and gas field
- markers represent!lin;
- field centerpoints published with permission from Petroconsultants
- International Data Corp.,!lin;
- 1996 database.!lin;

- This map was compiled using Environmental Systems Research Institute,
- Inc. (ESRI)!lin;
- ARC/INFO software. Political boundaries and cartographic representations
- on this map were!lin;
- taken, with permission, from ESRI's ArcWorld 1:3M digital coverage,
- have no political!lin;
- significance, and are displayed as general reference only.!lin;
